AMS honors Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker with Global Citizen Award

Every two years, Antwerp Management School (AMS) awards an exceptional and inspiring person who has a lasting impact on our society with the Global Citizen Award. On November 16, 2017, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker had the honor.

This prestigious award is the recognition for a ‘role model’ leader who has focused on integrating and spreading a number of values during their career that are high on AMS’ agenda. In particular, the areas of self-consciousness, global perspective, and societal consciousness, which all contribute to a better collaboration, creativeness to find solutions for complex problems, and sustainability.

"When artistic mastery goes hand in hand with creative entrepreneurship,
a sustainable impact is created on art and society"

Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker is internationally renowned for her influential choreographies. With her dance company, Rosas, she developed an extensive oeuvre that makes use of musical structures and scores from divergent eras and genres. She created a unique look on the body’s movement in time and space, in relation to music, and was inspired by formal principles of geometry, mathematical schemes, nature, and her social structures.

Besides her artistic mastery, De Keersmaeker also excels as a successful entrepreneur. She founded the school P.A.R.T.S. (Performing Arts Research and Training Studios) in Brussels in 1995 together with De Munt/La Monnaie. She also helped set up WorkSpaceBrussels. This is a work space where a diverse group of independent artists investigate how the various disciplines, such as performance, installation art, music, architecture, visual art, and graphic design together can lead to new art forms and new ways to exchange with different target groups. More recently, she supported the Dancingkids and RondOmDans initiatives, in which her vision on dance was brought to life in various youth groups.

Dean Paul Matthyssens underscores the importance of this recognition. “Her contribution to art, her commitment, and her leadership qualities make Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker a source of inspiration for current and future generations. In her we see the perfect embodiment of everything a Global Citizen represents.
