Ewald Van den Auwelant holds a master's degree in chemical engineering from the University of Gent and pursues a Postgraduate in Sustainable Business from the University of Cambridge. With field experience in international development, research, and the private sector, he brings a unique skills set to key environmental and societal challenges.

As sustainable transformation expert at Antwerp Management School, he focuses socio-economic development in harmony with nature. Via master classes, research and the facilitation of two think tanks he strengthens sustainability commitments within organizations.

His career began in the chemical industry, reducing emissions and energy usage, optimizing water and waste streams, and managing sustainability projects. From Corporate Social Responsibility he moved into development work in Africa, where he managed an NGO program in DR Congo, Uganda and Burundi. Focusing on climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies, freshwater, forest, and other ecosystems are restored to provide sustainable access to natural resources for local communities while protecting their environment.

His enquiring mind and capacity to think deeply and strategically about organizational sustainability goals remains open to new challenges, including adding to his already long list of language skills including English, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Dutch.

Gramitherm produces circular insulation panels made from mowed grass.

Additionally, their panels are recyclable, and they strive to incorporate various other circular improvements into their existing processes. PermaFungi cultivates oyster mushrooms on coffee grounds.

Embracing the concept of no waste in nature, PermaFungi utilizes coffee grounds as a substrate to cultivate oyster mushrooms. The resulting compost, known as 'champost,' is also employed by PermaFungi to create biodegradable material that can serve as a substitute for plastic. With a European subsidy of 2 million euros, they aim to scale up and market the production of so-called 'mycomaterial' in the coming years. Biolectric converts manure into energy, thereby reducing greenhouse gas and nitrogen emissions.

With their biogas installations or pocket digesters, Biolectric makes it easier for pig and dairy farmers to engage in sustainable business practices. Last year, they expanded their technology with a nitrogen stripper, enabling farmers to convert on-farm manure into green energy and a substitute for synthetic fertilizers. This serves as a significant lever for addressing climate and nitrogen-related issues while also providing an additional source of income for an industry under pressure. Since 2007, banks and brokers are no longer allowed to sell a financial product without knowing someone's risk profile and having assessed his knowledge of the financial markets and his experience on the stock exchange. That guideline has been tightened up on August 2 with new rules, in which bankers or brokers are obliged to gauge someone's need for sustainable investments. Banks use the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria, a set of standards for a company's behavior used to screen potential investments.
